Studio Inquiry

In this studio you will expand your existing design practice by combining computer scripting (code) with typography (words) in order to explore how reading and graphic design is transforming in the digital age.

Engagement

Karen ann Donnachie and Andy Simionato will lead you through a series of practical workshops and theoretical discussions around contemporary creative coding and typography with the objective of generating your own computer coded typographic designs.

Communication of knowledge

At the conclusion of the studio your works will be published as an interactive digital archive. Here is an example from an earlier iteration of this studio ~~~ https://simandy.github.io/codewords/

Activities

Introduction to
~creative coding typedesign

~generative AI and typography
~interactive web-design with Javascript, CSS, HTML, WebGL

Additional skills you can learn along the way include:
Designing your own custom typeface (using Inkscape, Fontforge)
Coding a typographic website (using Processing, OpenGL)

Assessments

The assessment tasks in this studio are designed to help you produce a number of original computer coded communication design works including:

1. A collaborative (group) research project

2. Major project combining typography and code which you will present as a Github website
3. An SKO which captures all the theory and skills from the studio that were significant to you, including a reflective piece of critical writing on your personal research into generative, parametric, and computer-driven communication design.

Notes

IMPORTANT! We will be working with some code in this studio. If you don't want to learn about creative coding for typography (Javascript, HTML, CSS), then please choose a different studio.

We will also be dedicating some time to the critical discussion of key artworks and texts. If you don't enjoy reading about and discussing critical design works and case-studies, again, you might want to consider a different studio.
