Studio Inquiry

The unit will explore the development and refinement of procedural / instructional visual language; calling into action practical and helpful practices. By examining the dialogue / interplay between image, drawing, colour, text, tone, graphic elements, iconography, etc., outcomes within the studio will aim to create clear, precise and playful instructional visual communication through a range of diverse production options.?

Definition of Instruction:

1. detailed information about how something should be done or operated.

2. advice and information about how to do or use something

3. the teaching of a particular skill or subject

Engagement

There will be a strong focus in the development of one’s own image making and instructional capabilities through diverse media use, techniques and approaches. This aims to help participants create communicative imagery which calls into action practical and helpful practices through playful and engaging visual language.

Communication of knowledge

The focus of the studio will be on process, making and experimentation. There will be a strong emphasis on the development of one’s own work, through regular deliberation and analytical discussion. Design elements and principles such as line, shape, scale, contrast, etc. will be explored and examined through a variety of processes including : observation, extraction, deconstruction, reconstruction, and arrangement via a series of exercises and workshops. These activities aim to acquire skill in learning how to view an image – including representational and abstract. Knowing design principles does not in itself make a good designer – it is how they are applied that determines quality.

Activities

Over the course of the semester you will create three different design outcomes exploring image making and concepts relative to procedural / instructional visual language.?

(1) Reflective Process Document.

(2) Development and refinement of 'subject' based instructional visual language through a diverse and appropriate range of visual communicative elements as ‘Visual Toolkit’.

(3) Production of communicative Procedural / Instructional design outcome.

Assessments

There are three Assessment Tasks for this studio;?

Task 01: EXPLORE : Process, experimentation and exploration 25%?

Task 02: DISCOVER : Instructional visual language development and refinement 35%?

Task 03: INSTRUCT : Procedural / Instructional design outcome 40%

Note: Task 2 and 3 contain gateway mandatory tasks (5%) which contribute to your final Assessment.
