An experimental studio exploring animated letterforms as expressive tools of dissent, identity, and urgency.
What does it mean for typography to move — to communicate, to perform, to provoke?
This studio explores how custom letterforms can be designed with motion in mind, using both analogue and digital methods. You will animate type as a gesture of resistance — a vehicle for protest, expression, and message.
This studio draws on current discourse in graphic activism, experimental typography, motion design, and digital publishing. You will engage with work by contemporary studios and practitioners exploring kinetic type in identity, protest, and spatial environments. Critical reference points include studies in political design, typographic resistance, and protest cultures. Motion design will be treated not only as a tool for visual expression but as a way to activate type across screens, voices, and public space.
You will develop and present motion-based typographic works, including experimental studies and a resolved major project. You will demonstrate your learning through design outcomes, process documentation, verbal critique, peer feedback, and presentations. Your projects will explore letterforms in motion as a vehicle for expression, identity, and protest. You will apply both conceptual thinking and technical skill in kinetic type production, supported by iterative critique and reflective writing.
You will participate in custom type design exercises, hands-on animation workshops, research discussions, and iterative critique. You will work individually and in small groups, engaging in peer-to-peer feedback, guided reflections, and basic technical tutorials in platforms such as After Effects. Your projects will involve both structured tasks and open-ended explorations. Emphasis will be placed on experimentation, collaborative review, and developing a typographic voice that is expressive and grounded in critical inquiry and social relevance.
