Studio Inquiry

This studio will allow you to explore the places you want to go with your design practice. How do you define and imagine places through design? What is your design experience, and what places do you want your creative practice and imagination to reveal? How do you communicate design and engage others? What is design's role in our public dialogues?
Engagement
This studio engages with knowledges and practices which inform current concepts around the role of design in revealing and supporting publics. Public practice, social practice and the use of story-telling and public discourse will support the work of the studio. Design writing will be examined and created in tandem with design-making, both in process and finished outcomes.
Communication of knowledge
The use of design-making as a primary research tool will be explored; research 'into' design and research through design. You will locate your design practice as a research methodology to understand and articulate the world. The development of each students' understanding and motivation for design will find articulation in tangible outcomes, be they printed ephemera, digital narratives, events or other appropriate outcomes.
Activities
You will be working with others to support, through design, a speaker/panel series; platforms, identity, promotion. You will be defining individually specified projects that respond to the 'design, place and dialogue' studio theme. The format and media of these projects will be defined by you in collaboration with your lecturers. You will develop your SKO project throughout the semester giving it an appropriate form upon completion.
Assessments
Brief 1: Studio Knowledge Object; another publication (non-media specific) that records, reflects and synthesises your studio and your outcomes; what have you learned? what can you now say? how did you come to say it? Brief 2: Individual project; place-public-produce. Research, plan and produce a 'publication' (non-media specific; documentary, strategy, platform, zine, poster series) that engages and articulates publics through design. A community, an impulse, a thematic, an idea, a focus. In dialogue and through dialogue. Brief 3: Studio group project; speaker/panel series; 6 talks, 6 white papers, 6 'publications', 6 modes of dissemination. Strategy and tactics
