Studio Inquiry
In this studio you will learn how to expand your existing studio practice through mixed reality communication design. Wikipedia tells us that 'mixed reality is the merging of real and virtual worlds to produce new environments and visualizations, where physical and digital objects co-exist and interact in real time.'
Karen ann Donnachie and Andy Simionato, with the support of Appearition, a Melbourne based agency specializing in Augmented Reality experiences, will lead you through a series of practical workshops with the objective of generating your own mixed reality communication design works.
Engagement
During the semester you will also participate in a series of short, lively seminars in the studio which are intended to provide an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the social and historical contexts and implications of mixed reality, from the stereoscopic imagery of 18th century parlor games (see our Dim Tricks book in the image above), to the more recent immersive experiences of VR headsets from companies like Oculus.
Communication of knowledge
For the duration of the studio we will partner with Appearition, a Melbourne based comapny specialising in developing Augmented Reality (AR) projects in partnership with peak companies and institutions. During the studio you will work alongside members of the Appearition team in order to share your experiences. At the conclusion of the studio your works will be published as a showcase of creative AR-driven posters and objects.
Activities
The assessment tasks in this studio are designed to help you produce a number of significant mixed reality communication design works including:
1. A typographic and/or image-driven printed A1 poster or object with custom-created AR content (viewable through a customized version of the Appearition App)
2. An SKO which captures all the theory and skills from the studio that were significant to you, including a reflective piece of critical writing on your personal research into mixed-reality communication design.
Assessments
Brief 1: AR u ready for a simple project? an entry level AR project intended for skill-building and learning best-practices
Brief 2: AR u ready for a major project? a conceptually driven AR project
Brief 3: SKO (Student Knowledge Object) to be discussed with your teachers
